About Kav2D

Version 1.60 · pages last reviewed 5 October 2026

A free browser-based 2D vector editor for drawings you can export as SVG or DXF — with a practical focus on laser-cutting preparation.

Kav2D (also written KAV2D) is an online SVG editor that runs in the browser. You draw shapes, edit paths, organise parts on a page, and export files for laser cutting, engraving and other maker work. There is nothing to install.

Who it is for

Kav2D is aimed at makers, educators, students, workshops and independent creators who need a focused 2D drawing tool rather than a full mechanical CAD suite. It is meant to stay simple and accessible: get a drawing onto the page, tidy the geometry, colour strokes for later machine operations, and export.

Why it runs in the browser

Projects open on the machine you already use. Drawings autosave in this browser. You can download a Kav2D project file, import SVG or DXF, and export SVG or DXF from File without creating an account.

What you can do today

  • Draw with Select, Edit Nodes, Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Star, Slot, Ring, Pie / sector, Spiral, Arc, Line, Polyline, Spline, Freehand and Text.
  • Combine closed shapes with Boolean operations: Union, Subtract, Intersect, Exclude / XOR and Divide.
  • Arrange with Align, Distribute, Mirror horizontally and Mirror vertically, plus Group.
  • Set page size and units in File → Document & material…, including material thickness and kerf values used when you choose to apply kerf on export.
  • Convert a drawing or photo into vectors with the left-toolbar Trace Image icon or Tools → Trace Image. Tracing stays in this browser. Colour distances use Björn Ottosson’s OKLab conversion; centreline mode uses Zhang–Suen thinning. See the Trace Image guide.
  • Dither a photo for raster engraving with File → Image to Laser… or the left-toolbar icon. Crop with Intersect. Export SVG or PNG; DXF omits the raster. See the Image to Laser guide.
  • Build a finger-joint box from the left-toolbar box icon or Tools → Box Generator, preview the assembly, then insert editable panels. See the Box Generator guide. Joint geometry is adapted from CutCase (MIT).
  • Save with Download project, reopen with Open…, and export SVG or DXF from Export….

Kav2D is not a replacement for professional CAD, CAM or the software that drives a particular laser cutter. It does not send jobs to a machine. You remain responsible for checking units, sizes, colours and cutter settings before you cut.

Kav2D was created by Erez D., an educator and maker working with workshop-based learning, laser cutting, CNC, 3D printing and digital fabrication. The public site, guides and editor are updated together. See What’s new for the latest documented work.
